Lecture at the Lanzarote College of Architects (COALZ)

One of the major challenges facing urban infrastructure in the context of sustainability is moving beyond conventional centralised systems and embracing more distributed systems. This paradigm shift turns every point in the city — and every new project — into an opportunity to actively participate in resource management: reusing water, generating energy, managing waste, recovering nutrients and fostering more circular and local cycles.

In this context, landscape architecture and the design of open spaces take on a new dimension. It is no longer just about creating landscapes, but also about making landscapes work as infrastructure: managing water and energy, supporting biodiversity, regulating microclimates and contributing to other urban processes.

I will be discussing these topics soon at the Colegio Oficial de Arquitectos de Lanzarote, in Arrecife, as well as the particularly stimulating challenges that arid and semi-arid territories offer for exploring this new paradigm.
