The future town square is located in the centre of the town centre, on a site occupied by a half-built shopping centre. Its failed execution has compromised the development of the town centre for more than a quarter of a century, causing widespread disappointment among the residents. The search for an alternative began with an intense process of participation. The agreed strategy for intervention consists of modulating the immense size of the site into smaller-scale squares (plazas). The spatial result is four squares and a boulevard. The formalisation of the squares results from managing the presence of the existing structure.

The first square includes a socio-cultural facility for training activities, workshops and events. A public space on the roof complements the nearby presence of the Town Hall. The second square takes the form of a botanical garden, celebrating the floral tradition of the municipality. The third is a restaurant area based on the surroundings’ fantastic wine offerings. The gabled tiled roof results from rescuing some old cellars in danger of demolition. Finally, the fourth square is an open-air auditorium with a central multifunctional platform. A textile roof protects from the sun and rain. The spatial system is completed by a cross-shaped boulevard that allows the site to be crossed in several directions. The sustainability plan includes rainwater harvesting for irrigation (water), solar panels on roofs (energy) and space rental (economy), resulting in a square that “sustains itself”.
